I forbindelse med den portugisiske speidergutten Alexandre Guedos som gikk Europa rundt i 1925, sendte jeg en epost til det som jeg antok var Portugals speidermuseum, og fikk etter en måneds tid svar:

Hallo dear Hallvard,

I'm a member of the Scout Documentation Center and the Lisbon Scouting Museum, after some contacts and message exchanges I have to say that we have never heard of this Alexandre Guedes' story but we are currently looking into our archives deeply.

There are currently two scout associations (recognised by WOSM) in Portugal and we are both working together to find something out. It's a very curious story and we promise to share it with you when we discover something, as we don't know which association that scout was part of. Although, based on the dates you sent, it is likely that he was a scout from the association "AEP - Associação dos Escoteiros de Portugal", whose archive is neither organized nor accessible (which could make research work more difficult).

If you could help us by sending as much information as possible it would be very useful as this story, as I said before, is unknown in Portugal.

Thank you very much to share this with us! Your in Scouting,

Bruno Cristóvão - Scout Documentation Center / Lisbon Scouting Museum

Olá Hallvard!

After some weeks, we managed to find out that "Alexandre Guedes" was actually going on a trip around the world. Although we have not been able to identify his association with certainty, we can safely say that this scout belonged to an association that has since ended.

After traveling through Europe, he took a boat to Africa and from Dakar he went by boat to Brazil in April 1926. In June 1926 he became seriously ill in the city of São Paulo and returned to Portugal, we have no further news of him since then... We know that the expenses of his return to Portugal were paid but we have no news if he returned or stayed in Brazil, what is certain is that he did not continue his journey.

In several Portuguese and Brazilian newspapers we find news where he comments that the countries he loved the most were Switzerland and Sweden. He commented that Soviet Russia was "neither as bad nor as good as everyone portrayed it". Also the only country the found to be "backward" was Turkey.

We also found a picture of him published on a Brazilian newspaper with the title "Alexandre Guedes the boyscout who is trying to travel around the world". I hope I helped in your research and thank you for making us (re)discover this figure of Portuguese Scouting!

Jarl V. Erichsen, Fevik/Grimstad (diskusjon) 1. mar. 2023 kl. 14:59 (CET)
